When Darth Vader assaulted Hoth he commanded the Star Dreadnought Executor and brought along a flotilla of Imperial-class vessels from Death Squadron. While others were either captured or defected over the years. Many Star Destroyers were destroyed after the death of Emperor Palpatine during the battle of Endor in 4 ABY. Star Destroyers built by the Corellian Engineering Corporation were considered the fastest in both sublight and hyperspace. As a result of the subcontract the various shipwrights led to some various altered designs. The Immense demand for Star Destroyers led Kuat Drive Yards to subcontract the design to multiple shipwrights. Official Imperial records reveal that 25,000 destroyers were eventually produced.

Eventually the Imperial-class rendered older vessels from the Republic as obsolete. The Imperial-class Star destroyer was symbolized as the might of the Empire. Despite the name change of the destroyer some Imperial documents continued to include to original name to identify the class. The production of the Imperial-class was increased and refined. After the Jedi Purge and establishment of the Galactic Empire, the Imperator model was renamed into Imperial-class. The First Destroyer was named Executrix, the second was named Exactor, which later served as the personal flagship of Darth Vader. It appeared in limited numbers during the end of the Clone Wars while it served in several Republic task forces, during the end of the Clone Wars in 19 BBY the Construction lines for the destroyer expanded while other destroyers such as the Venator-class began to holt production. The Imperial I-class Star Destroyer was designed as a medium-sized warship to be massive and powerful.
